BENGHAZI-GATE! – THE LATEST REPUBLICAN BATTLE CRY!

Why govern, when you can invent a scandal that stops government in its tracks!

Well, the GOP House of Representatives has continued to show that they have no clue as to how to govern.  And, we have learned that when you want everything to come to a dead-stop, all you need to do is to elect those same Republicans. 

But now, this same political organization is taking a whole new approach to their politics.

The GOP is now using a full blown campaign strategy, for stoking up their latest, bogus, political scandal. And it’s the same scandal that they have been pushing for months, but have been totally unable to make it stick.  But even with all these failures, if you want to totally unify the Republicans and send them into an absolute collective frenzy, all you have to do is say the word, “Benghazi”.

Yes, to the GOP, Benghazi is no longer a city in the war ravaged African country of Libya.  To them, they believe it is the collective cause that will bring down the current administration the way Watergate did to President Richard M. Nixon.

At first, it was determined that Obamacare was going to bring down Obama & Company, and they were almost successful.  But after a poor start with the ACA web site, Obamacare then rebounded, and now with over 8 million Americans signed up for health care coverage, all he GOP is now left with is, “Benghazi”.

Oh, they tried Fast & Furious and the non-IRS scandal.  But then came along the anticipated 2016 presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton.  As the Secretary of State, and with the devastating loss of 4 Americans when the American CIA embassy annex was attacked outside the city of Benghazi, this brought the Republicans the best of both worlds.  A potential scandal attached to their next probable Democratic presidential challenger.

There have been multiple investigations regarding this tragic loss in Benghazi and it has been made clear that the facility was not properly secure.  But the lack of security was not due to the efforts of the Secretary of State.  It was a big mistake, yes, but not a scandalous mistake.  In fact, it may have been more of a GOP House Budget mistake.  That's because it was a Republican Congress that had cut the US State Department’s budget for providing security for American Embassies.

Yes, Libya is a total war zone and the annex should have been more secure.  But the CIA annex was supposed to be a covert operation and they were trying to keep a low profile.  The ambassador that was killed had decided on his own to go to that location.  It was obviously a bad decision and there was no way the military or anyone else could have responded in time to save the 4 Americans.  But let’s not let the facts get in the way of a possible scandal.

Let’s face it, the Republicans have been trying to bet back from what happened to their party way back with the Watergate scandal and their president that was forced to resign.

Therefore, after the first George Bush lost to Bill Clinton, the Republicans went after the Clintons with bogus scandals, after bogus scandals.

Everything was a scandal to the GOP.  There was: “the Whitewater Scandal, then, Travelgate, Fostergate, Recordsgate, PaulaJones-gate, Callsgate, Lincoln Bedroomgate, Dealersgate, Templegate, Chinagate and finally, Monicagate”.  And with this final one, they were finally able to nail the then Democratic president with impeachment for lying to a Grand Jury about having sexual relations with a White House intern.  Whoopee!

The reality is that the Republican party is in total disarray and they do not have a good candidate in the wings for the GOP.  But they feel that if they can make anything about Benghazi stick to the former Secretary of State, and if they can get their voter ID laws and restricted voting hours and days past the US Department of Justice, they think they may have a chance against Hillary in 2016.

The fact is, all this brouhaha isn’t really about the actual attack in Benghazi. It’s about “Benghazi!™”, the brand name for the latest scandal. This follows their previous un-successful scandal product lines such as, “Whitewater™ and Travelgate!™ and their one, highly successful, “Monicagate!™”. 

Yes, the GOP knows that they will probably have another Clinton to kick around in 2016.  Her involvement in Benghazi!™ as Secretary of State gave them a perfect opportunity to dust off the old scandal approach they used on her and her husband. They’re hoping that the mere sound of Benghazi!™ will set off a Pavlovian reaction in independent voters and older Democrats who cringe at the prospect of a replay of the ’90s. And if the worst should happen and Clinton does get the nod for running in 2016, it’s expected to be the gift that keeps on giving. The Republicans will very likely still control the House after 2014 and we can expect to see many more “select committees” such as Mr. Issa’s to investigate all of the Republican’s hallucinations.

As was stated, for the Republicans, this sure beats governing. And by 2016, nearly half the country will, probably due to Fox News, already believe that Hillary Clinton ordered the attack on Benghazi in order to cover up her involvement in something even worse.  (It won’t matter that there is nothing even worse.)  They won’t know themselves exactly what it is that’s supposed to be worse, but where there’s smoke there’s fire, and as for Benghazi™, it will never be allowed to pass the GOP’s smell test.
