WINNING THE LOTTERY OR PICKING THE 2016 GOP NOMINEE: SIMILAR BETTING ODDS
Just roll the dice today to see who will be running for the GOP in 2016.
OK, OK, yes we’re
all sick of Donald Trump and his
constant blathering that, “I’m the greatest
non-politician that ever lived to be the US President and I’m going to make
this country great again!”
Did you ever
think that maybe the far-right Republicans that are supporting “The Donald”, are doing so because they
are just sick that their past 2 choices of John McCain and Mitt Romney
were the totally wrong approach?
That’s
probably because they see the past failures of the GOP
congressional leadership not even coming close to living up to what they had promised.
The strange reality is
that even though the Republican Party
is shrinking day by day, today the GOP
is about as strong as they’ve ever been.
They control
both houses of congress and they have done a fine job in controlling state
legislative seats and in the past appointments to the state and federal courts. Even the US
Supreme Court is run 5 to 4 by the conservatives.
So the GOP today is : “The strongest it’s been in decades”.
But in going
after the American Presidency, instead of the far-right feeling that if they
are going to fail, they might as well fail with an ideological true
believer…..they've instead seemed to have made a 180° turn.
This time,
instead of finding the ideal conservative nominee, the right-wing seems to be
saying that they want to “change how
things are done in Washington”.
If the polls
are correct about Donald Trump’s popularity, the polls suggest that Trump is getting his
support by just saying what some fed-up Americans want to hear. It’s much less about the content of the
message and much more about the style with which the message is delivered.
Whether Trump adopts conservative or moderate policies doesn’t seem to really
matter to his supporters. As trump’s
campaign slogan says, his supporters just want him to “Make America Great Again......Period!”
Now, with the
Republican’s Party being so very un-popular today, their future in continuing
to be so strong overall does look in question. But at this moment, that doesn’t
seem to matter.
As one
Washington writer put it, “If you’re a GOP voter, it’s hard not to think that
even a walking-talking ‘comb-over’ candidate could, well….. trump Clinton.”
Let’s face
it. The nation’s economy continues to
slowly recover, and the GOP is
deeply unpopular. But due to the efforts of the GOP and their BBF: Fox News, the president’s approval
rating remains negative. (Even though after leaving office, Obama’s
achievements will probably make him one of the nation’s most successful
presidents.) In addition, even though Hillary Clinton has her own
image problems, most of the 17 GOP
wannabee candidates have a host of multiple glaring flaws.
In such a
close race for a Republican nominee, ignoring a presidential candidate’s
electability (such as Trump's) could come back to hurt the Republicans it the current
polling results continue.
The reality is
that even through the nomination of Trump is highly unlikely, many of the other
candidates could be almost-as-damaging as a GOP presidential candidate.
This is why
the next 12 months of campaigning is going to be so very interesting. Especially for the on-line betting operation in Las Vegas. No one has a real clue as to who will be
sitting on top in the GOP when all
the dust clears going into the 2016 nominating convention.
So stay tuned,
as the Carpenter’s 1971 song still makes it very clear, “It’s Only Just Begun!”
