ONCE AGAIN, FOR THE GOP, ABORTION IS A KEY ISSUE
…Senator Marco Rubio: a strong supporter
of anti-abortion, with no exceptions
Being “Pro-Life” is more than
being anti-abortion.
With all the
brouhaha about “The Donald” being
against women, and with his latest tiff with FOX’s Megyn Kelly, the
old subject that has once again risen to the top for the GOP is "abortion".
Since most of
the many 2016 Republican candidates are scared to directly take on The Donald; since none will address the
nation’s income inequality or the raising of the minimum wage; other than
immigration, lowering taxes on the wealthy and repealing Obamacare, they are now left with their old anti-abortion
bill-of-goods. That’s especially the
case since the latest cause for their “War
On Women” again includes de-funding Planned
Parenthood. An organization that is currently the only
source of affordable women’s health care and contraceptives for millions of
American women.
But now it’s
not just about being
anti-abortion. In the past, it was
totally acceptable to be “Pro-Life”,
by saying abortion is a no-no, but you could have exceptions for rape and
incest, or to save the life of the mother.
Now the right-wing’s focus is that you are not really “Pro-Life” unless you are against all
abortions with no exceptions for rape, incest or even to save the life
of the mother. (Sorry, all you Republican mom’s.)
Today, if you
check out the 2016 Republican candidates, virtually all of them are against
abortion with no exceptions for anything, and they all want to de-fund Planned Parenthood.
In the first
2016 Republican debate on FOX, Marco
Rubio insisted that he supports no such exceptions for rape and incest victims
for abortions. Mike Huckabee declared
that “I think the next president ought to
invoke the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments to the Constitution now that we
clearly know that that baby inside the mother’s womb is a person at the moment
of conception.” Scott Walker went even further, as he recently signed a ban
on abortions after 20 weeks. The ban did
contain an exception to save the life of the mother, but no exceptions for rape
or incest.
But with all
of this, it has always been my understanding that to be a real politician, you were
supposed to listen to your constitutes….?
When pollsters
today ask Americans if they think that rape and incest victims should be able to get
abortions, more than 80% will say
yes, including the majority of both Republican men and women. Between 60%
and 70% are against overturning Roe v. Wade, a position on which both
Democrats and Republicans are united.
But the GOP platform has for decades called for
a complete ban on abortion without any exceptions. So, I guess it’s OK to ignore your constitutes.
It would be
accurate to say the Republican party and its candidates are making it clear
just how far to the right they have gone, and to hell with what the American people
want.
Even though
the high court has said now for decades that having an abortion is a woman’s
right, these Republicans won’t even acknowledge that women have any right to
control their own reproductive lives.
While Marco Rubio says women have such a right, he really believes that
in practice that right should always be nullified by the state. The government should force women to carry their
pregnancies to term.
All this means
is that Rubio doesn’t actually believe a woman’s right to decide on her own exists.
And these are
the same party that keep insisting that the government should stay out of all
American’s lives…..right!
What I
personally have against all this hypocrisy is that this group of charlatans
claim they are “Pro-Life” for their
position on abortion. But after a child
is born their “Pro-Life” position
disappears.
If you check
the statistics, from the Republican’s point-of-view, once you’re born, you’re
on your own. Yes, it’s the Republicans
in Congress that continually cut Food Stamps, school lunch programs, and just
about every budget where the government is providing help for the less
fortunate of American families. (80% of Food Stamps are for families with
small children.)
So far, the
Democrats aren’t making too much of a big deal about all the Republican’s “War On Women” stuff. But with Hillary’s focus on women’s issues
for 2016, the Republicans shouldn’t expect things to stay that way as Election Day gets closer.
