THE CRITIC OF PRESIDENT’S DAUGHTERS WAS ONCE ARRESTED
…Elizabeth Lauten found out that Facebook is not the place to criticize the president’s children.
Former Republican Representative’s
communications director loses her job for going after Sasha and Malia.
Well, I guess
the communications director for Rep. Stephen Lee Fincher (R-Tenn.) found out
what happens when you screw up in going after the president’s two teenage
daughters. The former director, Ms. Elizabeth Lauten, is now unemployed
after she went after the two girls on Facebook
by stating the following:
“I get you’re both in those awful teen years,
but you’re a part of the First Family, try showing a little class. Then again, your mother and father don’t
respect their positions very much…so I’m guessing you’re coming up a little
short in the ‘good role model’ department.
Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar. And certainly don’t
make faces during televised public events.”
This was all written
about the big annual White House
event where Sasha and Malia had been asked to participate by watching the
president’s pardoning of two Thanksgiving turkeys named “Mac & Cheese”.
I watched the
whole event and the two daughters did exactly what any two teenage young ladies,
13 and 16, would have done. At that age,
having to stand in the room with your parents is bad enough, but to also be on
TV and being asked if they wanted to “pet”
the turkeys should have given at least one of the girls the right to say...”Da-ad”.
But they both
acted just fine and they tolerated both of their parents for the event. As one writer even wrote, “I thought it remarkable that two girls that
age could be separated from their cell phones for so long.”
Then there’s
the issue of the negative comments about the way they were dressed.
Ms. Lauten obviously
hasn’t been to a local high school or possibly in a bar for some time. The
skirts were a bit short, but today’s teenage girls in high school would make
the Obama girls look like prudes compared to what shows up in today’s class
rooms.
Even Ms.
Lauten finally realized that she was very wrong and she later apologized, but
it was way too late to put the milk back in the cow.
As to Ms.
Lauten’s “holier-than-thou” attitude
about the girl’s parents not being good role models, some investigative
reporters have since found that Ms. Lauten has had her own run-in with the authorities.
It has now been
found out that Ms. Lauten was arrested in December 2000 for misdemeanor larceny.
According to
court records, Ms. Lauten, then 17, was arrested for stealing from a Belk Department Store in her hometown
in North Carolina. But because Lauten
was a first-time offender, her case was handled in a deferred prosecution
program, which resulted in the eventual dismissal of the charge’s after she stayed
out of trouble for a period of time.
Since she was
just another 17 year old teenager caught shoplifting at the mall, one then must
wonder if she was publicly criticized (as
she did to Sasha and Malia) for her having a “lack of class”. Or if her
parents were criticized as being “poor
role models”. I somehow doubt that occurred.
It is well
known that any US president’s children are supposed to be off-limits for the
press. But when the president invokes
his daughters to make a point, as this president has done, he opens the door to
public discussion. But that opening is only a small crack. It is not to allow someone to do as Ms. Lauten has
done and she has now paid the price by losing her well-paying government job.
Yes, the
president did give the two Thanksgiving turkey’s a pardon, and they will now live out their full
lives at a large, nature reserve.
But I wonder
what will now become of Ms. Lauten?
