doesn’t believe the idea behind the “Red Mirage”
In an election, voters must simply accept the tallies reported on Television. And on presidential election nights it can sometimes seem at first that a Republican win is inevitable, because more of the earlier-counted votes, cast in person tend to be for the GOP. (Trump had told his supporters to NOT use mail-in Ballots.) The electoral map fills with Red. Then later in the night, some states wink to Blue, as the mail-in ballots that skew Democratic are counted President Trump’s campaign manager, Bill Stepien, calls that phenomenon the “Red Mirage”, as he recently told the House Committee investigating the Jan. 6th attack on the Capitol. He had explicitly warned Trump that it would happen in the 2020 election.
Trump, then knew that the switch from a Red map to a Blue map is not a sign of skullduggery. But Trump chose to call it fraud anyway.
Indeed, months before voting day, Trump had predicted that 2020 would be “the most corrupt election” in the country’s history, saying: “There is tremendous evidence of fraud whenever you have mail-in ballots.” Many Trump voters believed what the candidate told them over and over, and why not? Even though it wasn’t true. (The 2020 election has been called the most scrutinized national election ever.)
There was no Excuse for Trump himself to continue repeating a lie that so many of his own top advisors had debunked.
Now, witness after witness is testifying to Congress that by doing so, Trump directly incited the mob that attacked the capitol.
That is a criminal act.
But will it bring a criminal penalty to the former president?
One can only hope.
