THE AMERICAN PUBLIC IS SIDING WITH AMERICA’S “RULE-OF-LAW”
…The way some are seeing the
President
New Post-ABC poll shows the truth
about President Trump
As expected,
President Trump angrily lashed out at former FBI director, James Comey on Twitter last week calling him a “LEAKER & LIAR” (in all caps) and an “Untruthful
slime ball”, who botched his handling of “the Crooked Hillary Clinton case”.
He then added: “It was my great
honor to fire James Comey!”
But these
Trump tweets were less revealing about Comey than they were about the
president’s own contempt for the “Rule of
Law”.
Trump doesn’t
seem to think that those of us that follow Washington politics really do know the difference between real news
and fake news.
The original, totally bogus pretext that Trump used to fire Comey was shown in a memo from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein,
which recounted that Comey had mishandled the Clinton email probe in a way that
was unfair to Hillary.
But by today’s
version of the events by Donald Trump’s highlights, he says that Clinton is “crooked”. This obviously means that Trump says Comey
mishandled the Clinton case by not prosecuting her on a criminal
bases. This is of course in keeping with Trump’s continuing calls for
Clinton’s prosecution since the election.
Trump seems to
forget that we all know that Trump fired Comey out of his rage over the Russia
probe, and he admitted that fact in his TV interview with Lester Holt.
And today,
Trump still casually suggests that he is pleased and proud that he fired Comey
because Comey failed to “LOCK HER UP!”, again referring
to Hillary Clinton.
Come on Mr.
President. Why can’t you get your
stories straight? For someone that is a
record holder for the politician that tells the most lies, you would think that
he would at least keep them all in line.
To stress the
point of Trump’s questionable statements, The Wall Street Journal published
a report last week that the president had made over 2400 un-true statements
since he took office. My gracious, they
are actually keeping a close count of Trump’s lies!!
And the above
are just a few of them, but they are starting to take a toll on the office of
the president.
Comey’s new
book recounts Trump’s efforts to derail the Russian probe by his demanding
Comey’s loyalty and leaning on him to go easy on former national security
adviser Michael Flynn. But Trump had to
ultimately, fire Flynn.
But NBC News is reporting that
Mueller may now be closing in on the findings of Trump’s obstruction of
justice, and so Trump’s nonstop lies are currently focused on delegitimizing
the Mueller probe and the Trump lies are intensifying.
But the
new Washington Post/ABC poll represents a
major public vote of confidence in the Mueller investigation, and a major
negative attitude toward Trump’s de-legitimization of it as a mere “witch hunt.” The public is seriously recoiling at Trump’s
contempt for the rule of law
The poll found
that 69% of Americans support
Mueller’s efforts to investigate possible Russia-Trump campaign collusion, and 64% support Mueller’s investigation of
Trump’s business activities. You may of
course recall that Trump declared his business as “a red line that Mueller mustn’t cross”. But the poll also finds that 58% support Mueller’s investigation of
hush money paid to women who alleged affairs with Donald Trump.
So, what about
public’s attitude toward Comey?
Well, the poll
finds that Americans see Comey as much more believable than Trump by 48% to 32% and they disapprove of
Trump’s firing of Comey by 47% to 33%.
Those numbers are shockingly low for President Trump
Some people at
first saw this poll only as a reflection of the deep unpopularity of Donald
Trump.
But after more
in-depth analysis, it seems that the numbers are suggesting that the
unpopularity of Trump is just the surface of the issue. Looking deeper, it appears that it’s an attitude of the public's increasing realization of Trump’s total contempt for our
institutions and the American “Rule of
law“. More and more Americans are
becoming aware of Trump’s contempt and those Americans are recoiling at it.
The reason for
the growth of this public realization is because Trump’s contempt is so obvious, and it's everywhere.
You see it in
Trump’s double standard toward due process in which he rages at the raiding of
his lawyer’s office. But he does this
while he cheers law enforcements abuses directed at Muslims, immigrants and African
Americans.
You see it in
his comments about considering firing the Deputy AG, Rosenstein for the express
reason that the Deputy AG is conducting him business by-the-book of the FBI.
Trump views
law enforcement and the Justice department as an instrument for carrying out
his personal political will, not by America's “Rule
of Law”. And he has told us all this in his own words over, and over,
and over, again and again.
Trump’s
outrageous tweets about Comey confirm all of this.
And this
public repudiation of Trump comes after he and his allies have waged an
extraordinary public campaign in the right-wing media [i.e.: Fox News] and even in the US Congress. Both of which have been weaponized to create
a fictional narrative designed to shield Trump from accountability. This done by casting the Russia investigation
and the institutional processes as hopelessly corrupted to their core.
But the good
news is that this latest poll shows that the American people are siding with
the “Rule of Law” and our
institutions, and against Trump.
And now that
Sean Hannity’s name has been added to the roster of involved Trump supporters,
who knows where this mess is headed….?
As the
Trump-Comey feud continues to blossom, the larger narrative of the public’s
understanding of Trump’s contempt will hopefully be that which unravels the
mess in the capital that today we call the
“Trump White House”.
