NICE TO HEAR A TRUE CONSERVATIVE CRITICIZING THE CURRENT GOP
Bruce Bartlett
This long-time conservative thinks
the current Republican Party is “rather stupid”.
It becomes
interesting when one reads about those past conservatives, some very high up in
past Republican administrations, when they finally get sick of all the BS and
the lies coming from today's conservatives. Then upon hearing all the right-wing talking-heads on Fox News, they finally have to just throw in the
towel.
Now, there’s
one of these individuals that was a serious advisor to both President Ronald
Reagan and George H.W. Bush. He hasn’t
become a dyed-in-the-wool liberal, but he has pretty much given up on the
current version of the Republican party.
That man is Bruce Bartlett.
Today, he is an American historian whose area of expertise is
supply-side economics. He once served as a domestic policy adviser to President
Ronald Reagan and as a Treasury official to George H. W. Bush.
At the recent Conservative
Political Action Conference (CPAC), potential Republican candidates
were invoking President Ronald Reagan whenever the opportunity
arose. However, in an interview on MSNBC,
Bruce Bartlett, was asked “How would
Reagan have been treated at today’s CPAC?”
Bartlett’s
response: "I think he probably would
be booed out of the crowd." Bartlett added, "If only because he gave amnesty to illegal aliens back in 1986.
Nativists like Representative Steve King routinely denounce Reagan for that. They
would have denounced him for raising taxes eleven times. They would have
denounced him for raising the debt limit. They would have denounced him for
running budget deficits. They would have denounced him for supporting labor
unions. ... And we are not even getting into all the liberal things that he did
as governor such as signing the most liberal abortion law in the United States.
I think this guy definitely would not be a favorite of this crowd."
When asked, “Is it that conservatives and CPAC attendees
just do not know their history?”
Bartlett said,
"Well, I guess they have completely
forgotten about George W. Bush whom they defended to the heavens when he was in
office." Bartlett added,
"But yes, they are really rather stupid and not very well read. To
them Reagan is a distant figure in history."
Bartlett is
actually a lifelong conservative who now thinks the GOP panders to fools, whom he calls “wankers”.
Bartlett is
also a popular Twitter
participant. Here are some of his recent
Tweets:
“The continued intransigence in the House is
palpable. When Republicans overtly start criticizing their mouthpieces, then
something is wrong in the party hierarchy.”
“James Inhofe may be a buffoon and a crackpot
on climate change.”
“In
Texas, lynchings never really ended; the state simply took over the job.”
“Wankers
bankrupting their states with tax cuts. It's partly intentional to give excuse
to slash spending for the poor.”
“Why is
Fox not embarrassed by Bill O'Reilly's lies? Because it's an entertainment
channel, not a news channel, of course.”
The following were some responses to this last
Tweet:
1. “That's said a lot. But to the Fox audience
it is news and information & shapes their views and positions. Then they
interact.”
2. “It's actually a propaganda channel more than
an entertainment channel. It has a political agenda.”
3.
“That's
not really a surprise to anyone.”
It’s too bad
that there aren’t more high-level individuals that also see what’s become of
the GOP. But between Fox, Limbaugh and Glenn Beck,
as long as these perpetual liars and bigots continue to have their listener’s
ears, we won’t be seeing many more Bruce Bartlett’s.
