ROY MOORE’S WIN IN ALABAMA MAY BE BEST FOR THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY
…Roy Moore rode in to vote on his
horse while carrying a pistol.
Many Republican senators can
expect to be primaried by those on the far right.
The winner of
the Republican primary in Alabama for the Senate seat vacated by Senator Jeff
Sessions tells us a lot about Southern politics and where the Southern states
will probably be in the 2018 and 2020 elections.
Let’s look at
the controversial conservative and former Alabama chief justice, Roy Moore who
won the Republican primary while setting up a serious problem within the GOP. Here's a look at the problems his
win poses for the D.C. establishment.
The stunning
defeat of President Trump’s chosen Senate candidate in Alabama on Tuesday
amounted to a major political upset, setting the stage for a worsening
Republican internal civil war. A war that could have profound effects on up-coming
elections. It also immediately showed
Trump’s lack of clout with his core voting base.
The GOP primary victory by the
controversial Roy Moore over Sen. Luther Strange could also produce a stampede
of Republican retirements in both Houses over the coming months. It could also develop an energized swarm of
challengers. Because of this win of a
candidate supported by the former Trump Senior Strategist, Stephen Bannon, many
Republican senators can expect to be primaried by those on the far right.
The win also
marked another humiliation for the Washington-based Republican establishment,
particularly Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), whose allies pumped
millions of dollars into the race to prop up the appointed Senator Strange and
reassure his colleagues that they could survive the Trump era.
It is
important to understand where Roy Moore stands on important issues. Here are just a few of Moore’s views and
opinions.
·
Moore believes
that being a homosexual should be against the law. (He
says it’s the same as “Bestiality”.)
·
Moore was
removed from the Alabama Supreme court because he used public money to place a
12 ton Ten Commandments Monument on
public property, that being on the Alabama Supreme Court’s grounds. Moore refused to have the monument removed
which meant he was going directly against the laws he was supposed to support.
·
Moore thinks
the 9/11
attack was God punishing the American people for not obeying God’s laws.
·
Moore wants
the first and only elected Muslim in
the US Congress, Keith Ellison, to be investigated by Congress, just because he’s a
Muslim.
·
Moore is
against “Dreamers” and he is for the
all-Muslim Ban.
·
Moore is OK
for open carrying a loaded assault weapon in public.
·
Moore was a “Birther” about President Obama and he
supported Trump’s long-time birther movement.
·
Moore refers
to all non-white Americans as “Blacks”,
“Reds” and “Yellows”.
Moore’s win
demonstrates the real political limitations of Trump, who endorsed “Big Luther Strange” at Senate Leader
McConnell’s urging. He also staged a
rally for Strange in Huntsville, Ala., just days before the primary. Trump now blames McConnell for having him
support Luther Strange. (You known that narcissist Trump, will never
take responsibility for any losing situation, even when it’s his fault.)
“It’s almost as if there is a compulsion in
the party to nominate the most ‘out there’ candidate just to show you can, with
no concern about what that means for the rest of the party,” said Charlie
Sykes, a former conservative talk-radio host. “Republicans, and that means Trump, too, have unleashed something they
can’t control.”
With Senator
Bob Corker (R-TN) retiring, seven additional Senate Republicans are expected to
run for reelection next year: Roger
Wicker (R-MS), Dean Heller (R-NV), Jeff Flake (R-AZ), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Deb
Fischer (R-NB), Orrin G. Hatch (R-UT) and John Barrasso (R-WY). It wouldn’t take many Democratic wins to take
away the senate from the Republicans.
“The president went into Alabama because of
loyalty and political necessity,” said Christopher Ruddy, the chief
executive of Newsmax Media and
Trump’s very good friend. “When he’s
faced with this kind of situation in the future, he’ll support his friends, but
the question is how far he goes. He may be much more careful.”
One of Trump’s
first choices will be how much to get behind Moore, who GOP leaders fear could be a burden to all Republican candidates
nationally. At Trump’s Huntsville rally, when he conceded he “might have made a mistake in backing the
incumbent Strange”, Trump then did a 180° turn as he
vowed to “be here stumping like hell for
Moore if he won”.
Veteran
Republican pollster David Winston, who works closely with GOP party leaders, said that “Given
what [Stephen] Bannon has been doing, you could see how other primaries would
be of value to him and his network. Alabama was their test case and Moore
winning opens the door in other places.”
Bannon is
ready to yank that door open, as he worked in recent days with other Republicans
considering a primary campaign. Tennessee
state Sen. Mark Green, who had been considering a Bob Corker challenge, was
with Bannon in Alabama. The wealthy Mercer family that has for years been Bannon’s
billionaire backers, they have been in touch with these contenders and they
have encouraged Green to run.
“For Mitch McConnell and Ward Baker and Karl
Rove and Steven Law, all the instruments that tried to destroy Judge Moore and
his family, your day of reckoning is coming,” Bannon said Monday night
at Moore’s election eve rally. He
then listed the names of all of the Republican operatives who are allied with Mitch
McConnell and that had spent the more than $10 million to boost Senator
Strange’s losing candidacy.
“They [the Republican establishment] think
you’re a pack of morons, they think you’re nothing but rubes, they have no
interest at all in what you have to say, in what you have to think or what you
want to do,” Bannon told
the crowd.
“I fully anticipate a whole lot of people who
had nothing to do with the losing result taking credit for Alabama,” said
Josh Holmes, McConnell’s former chief of staff, mentioning Bannon and Breitbart News. “It’ll lead to more friendly fire in our party, which will make it
tougher, not easier, to pass health care and taxes. What we need is cohesion.”
This election
was bad news for Trump, but even more so for the Republican run US Senate. Being that all the Repeal Obamacare efforts have all failed since Trump was elected,
if the so called “tax reform program”
doesn’t take, Trump’s presidency and Republican control could be in peril.
So, for those
of us that don’t support the Trumpster,
we can just cross our fingers while we work real hard to get out the Democratic
vote.
